Boarding School for Histrionic Personality Disorder
What’s the Problem?
Histrionic Personality Disorder is characterized by her excessive attention-seeking behavior and extreme emotionality. This disorder can produce inappropriate and risky behavior; find her constantly seeking reassurance, with heightened sensitivity to criticism, inability to delay gratification, being easily frustrated or with rapidly shifting emotional states (with feelings that may all be expressed with the same depth of emotion). In general, she’s bored with usual routine, and may come across as “fake” or shallow in her interpersonal relationships with others.
Does she seem uncomfortable when she is not the center of attention, or is very lively and dramatic, showing exaggerated expressions of emotion? Are her interactions often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior, maybe even believing relationships to be more intimate than they actually are?
You may find your daughter manipulative and taking steps to remain the center of attention within the family, too. She may find school boring and have trouble focusing on completing assignments and projects. Romantic relationships may be quickly started and then abandoned for the excitement of new ones. She is also at greater risk of depression and co-morbid disorders (meaning, two or more simultaneous illnesses).
There is no specific test for diagnosing histrionics, and no specifically identified cause (though the disorder may be linked to childhood trauma or stress). Her symptoms of behavior will be weighed and form the basis of evaluation.
Psychotherapy (specifically cognitive behavior therapy) is the most commonly used treatment for Histrionic Personality Disorder; it generally focuses on development of appropriate boundaries, and self-development to counter the behaviors that often result in damaging or risky conduct. Though group therapy is sometimes used, it presents the danger of providing an audience and a stage on which your girl can seek attention and affirmation for her patterns of behavior. Family therapy may have the same downside, but may be useful to equip the entire family to respond properly to her histrionic behaviors and symptoms so as to not encourage further bad conduct.
Approaches forHistrionic Personality Disorder will likely not focus on a long-term, personality change, but rather short-term alleviation of difficulties within her life. Few have the time or cost required to fully “cure” this disorder, and this should be understood to dismiss any thoughts of a “magical” cure.
A Balanced Program
It is most important to us to help your teen with her Histrionic Personality Disorder but, along with her academic work (we offer a fully accredited high school diploma), we think it is also very important for her life to be well balanced.
To that end, we provide many activities, such as horseback riding, volleyball, swimming, caring for farm animals, wilderness outings, uplifting movies and more. Your daughter will learn to sing in our choir and to speak publicly. Our school offers a well-balanced therapeutic program designed to help her get back on track spiritually, behaviorally and academically.
Typical boarding schools tend to expel misbehaving girls but at Wings of Faith, we welcome them and work with them to change their behaviors.
Wings of Faith is an affordable conservative Christian boarding school, designed for pre-teen and teenage girls who are struggling with bad behavior and rebellion. The Academy provides behavioral correction with an emphasis on Christian values, set in a comfortable residential ranch setting.
Our methods have been turning teen girls around for over 20 years. Our school is a member of the Missouri Association of Christian Child Care Agencies (MACCCA).
If you’re seeking a solution to your daughter’s life-disrupting condition, please call (417) 276-8761 and speak to us at Wings of Faith. Let us show you how we can help her overcome her Histrionic Personality Disorder, and start the transformation of her life to a joyful and productive future.
