Borderline Personality Disorder in Teenage Girls
What This Is, and Why Is it Happening?Borderline Personality Disorder is a mental health illness in which girls might be seen exhibiting unusual levels of depth and variation of moods, pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image and behavior. Borderline Personality Disorder (also sometimes called Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder) might cause her to be filled with self-loathing, marked change in mood triggered by perceived rejection, isolation or failure. With BDP, she might be hypersensitive to correction or criticism, and her feelings toward others subject to rapid shifts and changes. Feelings of worthlessness might lead to risky and impulsive behavior and a sense of recklessness.
If your daughter suffers from Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder she is likely to see things (or people) in great extremes, either perfect or terrible, something (someone) wonderful one day can be awful the next; very black and white thinking. This can lead her to chronic instability in relationships, self-damaging impulsive behavior (in eating, spending, drug use, driving or sex), frequent displays of temper or inappropriate anger, self-mutilating behavior or suicidal behavior.
As with so many other personality disorders, while the causes for BPD are not known, a combination of environmental, genetic factors and brain chemistry are thought to be causal contributors. Higher risk might also come from a close family member who has the disorder, or from childhood abuse or neglect.
How Can BPD Be Handled?
Treatment is primarily therapy-based but can be challenging, because there must be a high level of trust between your daughter and her therapist, something often difficult to achieve because of the rapid and extreme mood swings. Different treatment types might include cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. While not normally part of the protocol, certain medications are also sometimes successful.

How Balance Can Help
While it is most important to help your teen with her Borderline Personality Disorder, along with her academic work (we offer a fully accredited high school diploma), we think it is also very important for her life to be well-balanced.
To that end, we provide many activities, such as wilderness outings, horseback riding, volleyball, swimming, caring for farm animals, inspiring movies and more. Your daughter will learn to sing in our choir and to speak publicly. Our school offers a well-balanced therapeutic program designed to help her get back on track spiritually, behaviorally and academically.
